The harmony between architecture and energy efficiency

HUF HAUS have continually developed energy efficiency in our homes. One of the milestones of this development is the green[r]evolution design which has quickly become the pioneer for innovative and energy-efficient timbered architecture.

Each HUF house construction achieves the efficiency grading of ‘House 55’ (KFW-classification) and the ‘green [r]evolution’ house is equipped with all the necessary energy efficiency features at no additional cost. A HUF house can be built as a plus energy house at your request.

Discover the new aesthetics of the classic architect house

Our customers love the HUF House as it is, with its unique aesthetic and enduring clarity of form. We have now evolved this distinctive look further within the context of a revolutionary new construction design, to offer many new design features to explore. As befits a classic product, each of these features enhances, preserves or strengthens the essential HUF elements. After all, good design is never purely decorative.

Please see for yourself at one of our show houses or in the  HUF Village located at our company headquarters in Hartenfels. You will be inspired.

Make use of tomorrow's energy efficiency today

“The more we learn to appreciate the importance of Nature, the more we feel our responsibility to protect it."
Georg and Thomas Huf († 20.09.2011)

This focus on Nature and the environment is what has always connected us at HUF HAUS with our customers.

Protecting our environmental and climate cannot wait
In shaping the energy efficiency of the new generation of green[r]evolution HUF houses, we chose to take a revolutionary approach. Protecting our environment and climate cannot wait! The greatest challenge was to achieve minimum energy consumption despite generous glazed areas. Our HUF engineers have succeeded - with a powerful combination of determination and creativity. At the same time, they have set new standards in timber-frame construction demonstrating that the centuries-old proven method of building with wood has a bright future when adapted intelligently to address new challenges.

The revolutionary innovation in timber-frame construction of the HUF HAUS is the use of highly efficient thermal insulation with the wooden structural components. This unique insulation is prefabricated with great care and effort at the HUF factory. This reduces any "thermal leakage", weak points in the thermal outer shell, to an absolute minimum.

Design principle

The energy-saving revolution in half-timbered building

Stuctural Thermal insulation

The revolutionary HUF HAUS innovation for timber-frame buildings is that all wooden structural elements use a highly efficient thermal insulation layer. This unique insulation is prefabricated with great care and effort in the HUF HAUS plant. "Thermal leakage", weak points in the thermal outer shell, is thus reduced to an absolute minimum. The energy efficiency thus realised obviates the need for mineral wool.

Adaptable to any climate region

As part of HUF HAUS' green[r]evolution innovation, the already well-insulated walls have been designed to maximise energy efficiency. As well as increasing the wall thickness, adjustable according to the climatic region, the wall materials have been optimised to achieve maximum thermal insulation.

The high-quality rendered external wall sections no longer require any joint seals.

building technology

State-of-the-art and future-proof building technology

In addition to the structural heat insulation, each new HUF House is equipped with the latest  technology that makes a significant contribution to its energy efficiency. Even in its basic configuration, the green[r]evolution HUF HAUS includes the following energy efficient technology:

  • High-efficiency air-to-water heat pump - latest generation. The principle is simple and ingenious. The heat pump uses the natural heat in the air that surrounds us all the time. This heat is extracted from its natural environment, compressed to increase the temperature and then transferred to the heating system.
  • Modern under floor heating - HUF HAUS installs a modern under floor heating system. It represents the decision for comfort and efficiency:
Surface heating is a low-temperature heating system, as due to the large heating areas a low temperature level is sufficient to heat the building.
Rooms are evenly heated by the radiant warmth of the floor. The pleasant radiant warmth of the floor provides comfort and improves well-being. Heat loss is minimized when generating and distributing the heat through low flow temperatures.
In accordance with the Energy Efficiency Regulations are all individual rooms / zones provided with and controlled by separate thermostat controls.

If desired, every HUF house can also be equipped with the following technology:

  • HUF air Fresh automated room ventilation (KWL) - monitors and controls the air flowing into and out of all rooms in order to save valuable energy. The ventilation unit is equipped with a high efficiency cross-flow heat exchanger which uses the heat of the exhaust air to pre-heat the fresh air intake and thus directs warmed fresh air into the room. The system also includes a highly effective filter that keeps dirt particle and pollen out of the rooms. So further energy saving is combined with creating a pleasant and healthy indoor environment

  • Photovoltaic system - invest to earn. Photovoltaic systems convert solar energy into electrical energy. Subject to local regulation, electrical energy generated in this way can be fed into the public grid thus generating an income. This significantly improves the overall energy balance of your home. The ART 9 show house in the HUF Village demonstrates how you can go beyond mounting a photovoltaic system on the roof to integrating it harmoniously into the overall architecture of the house

  • Solar Heating System for Hot Water Supply- In addition to the hot water supply HUF HAUS offer solar panels on the roof. A respective concept will be tailor-made to compliment the choices you made in your fit-out.

The continuous optimisation of energy-efficiency

Major steps with measurable results

Triple glazing

Triple glazing is included

HUF HAUS uses special quality controlled highly insulated triple glazing:
U-value: 0.5W/m2K according to

  • DIN EN 673
  • G-value: 0.48 to DIN EN 410
  • Sound resistance: R’w 41 dB
  • (L-LAD test report 09/121/03)

Glass specification from outside to inside:

  • 8.0mm highly insulated glass
  • 16.0mm argon filled cavity (SZR)
  • 5.0mm float glass
  • 16.0mm argon filled cavity (SZR)
  • 6.0mm highly insulated glass

Total glass panel thickness: 51 mm

The sealant is thermally insulated. The glazing rebate is also themally insulated. The space between the panes is filled with Argon gas.

The outstanding quality of this glazing delivers three advantages at the same time:

  • Protection from cold
  • Protection from heat caused by solar radiation
  • Protection against external noise, from urban or road sources.

Building automation

HUF building automation

Smart, easy control for greater comfort and economy

Upon request, we can make your house smarter. With the KNX technology, we embed the building with a network of communicating devices. It can regulate the use of light, heat, fresh air and shade practically on its own. KNX makes it possible to connect the automated interaction with various components and therefore offers more comfort safety and efficiency in your HUF house.

For the following function areas we have put together attractive packages:

  • HUF KNX Starter
  • HUF KNX Exclusive

Each package differs with various features. With the HUF KNX Starter package we have created an attractive entry point to the world of building automation. Once the infrastructure is in place, you can expand your KNX system at any time as
KNX is almost limitless in its expandability, always adaptable and therefore future proof. During its life of the installation the user requirements can be adapted quickly and flexibly. Extensions and alterations can therefore be easily integrated into the system.

  • "What functions should be automated?"
  • "What technical functions would the house owner prefer to control the conventional way?"

The HUF consultants with their extensive expertise and market knowledge will help each house builder to find a customised solution.
