Designing Modern Home Libraries

Where Books Find Their Place in a HUF House

Whether it's a wall of shelves, a multi-storey library, or a simple bookcase, there are countless ways to showcase books and accessories, vases, and picture frames in a room.

For some, books must always be within easy reach, well-organised of course, while for others, the focus is more on the furniture itself and its overall impact in the space. How do books find their place in a HUF house? Take a look inside the homes of our clients in Germany, Switzerland, and UK.

1. XXL Library Across Two Floors

Home to a true book lover! Hundreds of volumes of various works are gathered on the ground and upper floors in floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that seamlessly integrate into the ebony-coloured timber-frame architecture. The airy reading atmosphere is achieved through a 37-square-metre ceiling opening that visually connects both floors.

2. Perfect Fit: Bespoke Bookshelf

The residents of this HUF house ART 3 have designed the gallery area as an open reading nook. With floor-to-ceiling glazing, plenty of natural light floods the interior, reducing the need for artificial lighting. The bookshelf was bespoke crafted for the couple by StilART, a company within the HUF group, and fits perfectly into the existing timber-frame architecture.

3. Library with a Grand Entrance

In Surrey, UK, the homeowners opted for a living room concept that gives special attention to the library, thanks to a spectacular staircase leading to a gallery area. While the living room offers views of the greenery from the fireplace, the book wall is positioned on an additional level. Two cosy armchairs await their use in this lofty space.

4. Cosy Reading Nook

Natural oak wood creates a particularly cosy ambience in this living room with its tranquil reading nook. The integrated, fabric-covered seating area is a harmonious part of the unique piece of furniture, which houses not only various books but also the family's favourite accessories.

5. Bookshelf as Room Divider

The owners of a HUF house in Germany's capital love order, so this special bookshelf functions as a room divider in the living room. On one side, a bookshelf with ample storage space, while on the side facing the sofa area, an artwork adorns the "white canvas."

6. More Than Just Storage

"A bookshelf should not simply be a storage place for books. Rather, it should also create a sense of living in the room."

Michael Baumann, a former member of the management team at HUF HAUS, has transformed a wall shelf into a true spatial experience. Visitors can admire this gem at the Riverview show home in Weybridge. Information about HUF architecture is available in the HUF HAUS brochures.

7. Change of Location

Your library doesn't necessarily have to be in the living room. If your reading material includes work-related texts, perhaps the office is the right place for browsing and research. A couple from Ticino has also opted for floor-to-ceiling shelves along the wall to house their impressive book collection.

8. Making Use of the Attic

For those wishing to place their library in the attic, this HUF house ART 4 serves as inspiration. A classic step ladder allows access to the upper shelves, utilising the full height of the space. The bright reading area benefits from floor-to-ceiling glazing, providing plenty of daylight.

9. Combined Elements

This beautiful wall consists of a lowboard with drawers, shelf spaces, and colourful cubes in orange and yellow tones, which not only create a fresh look but also offer additional storage. On the shelves, the homeowners display their travel souvenirs and favourite books. While the cubic forms perfectly complement the clean lines of the timber-frame architecture, the combination of closed and open elements adds a certain tension.
