Living the dream on the lakeside

On warm sunny days, tourists can visit thousands of lakes in and around Berlin (Germany) where they can swim or fish. In the southeast of the city, the Blum family has created their private beach oasis – with a dream house on the lakeside and their own bathing jetty.

"We have been dreaming of our own HUF house on the lake for thirty years. It was worth the wait, because in 2016 we finally found the perfect plot," says the owner, who at the time immediately fell in love with the open design of the post-and-beam houses.

The plot, which covers more than 2,000 square metres, is completely sheltered thanks to old trees and extends directly to the shoreline. From the beach lounger, it is only a few steps across the green lawn to the post-and-beam villa. The house, water and garden are harmoniously combined and this is particularly noticeable in the architectural concept that the family developed together with the HUF HAUS planning team.

Open spaces

The fully glazed gable faces southwest and opens completely towards the lake. Thanks to the floor-to-ceiling glazing, the rooms are flooded with light – the boundaries between inside and outside dissolve almost completely. Especially when you open the large lift-slide element that connects the living room and fireplace room with the terrace.

Since the roof of the HUF house is sloped on one side, the result is a covered patio and thus another popular outdoor spot. Inside the house, this architectural approach makes for an airy dining space, as the ceiling height reaches all the way to the ridge.

Despite its fully glazed gable end, the HUF house ART 4 is a highly efficient home. Heat is generated by means of an environmentally friendly brine-to-water heat pump, while the underfloor heating distributes the heat in the house.
